Have you ever heard the term “Squeezing water out from a stone”? Well that’s what the Crescenta Valley Water District will need to figure out how to do in the coming years! Our community needs bright minds in the leadership roles of the Water District, and the upcoming election of the Water Board could set our course for the future, either positively or negatively.
The Crescenta Valley Community Association will hold a candidate forum
for the 6 candidates for the Crescenta Valley Water District Board on
Wednesday Sept. 23rd, 7PM – Dunsmore Park Community Room, 4700 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta.
CV Town Council president Steve Pierce will be the moderator. Please come out and hear how these candidates propose to solve CV’s looming water problems.

Maybe one topic of candidate discussion could be: Is it necessary to water the sidewalks on Honolulu Avenue? I noticed the sprinklers are watering not just the grass, but the concrete. Of course, I wonder why there needs to be grass in the first place? Can’t Montrose get it together enough to put in something drought tolerant and native to the area? There are gorgeous alternatives.
I’d think it would be a real feather in the cap of a landscape company to do it for a small plaque on Honolulu with their information on it.
A bit of advertising in exchange for a real water saving solution. Is that too much for the city to pay for? Or is there just so much red tape that the simple answers to problems become nightmarish debates?
I’d like to thank Mike Lawler for taking the time to email me on which council would be interested in the sprinklers on Honolulu. As I now understand it, it’s the Glendale City Council and not the CV Town Council who would be concerned with that.
I’m probably not the only one living in the area who is not completely aware of the territorial borders of the Crescenta Valley. But then again, my words are printed so I accept more accountability.
That innocent error aside, I do hope the CV Water District Board succeeds in finding great people to help solve the water problems in the area. As many of you know, water conservation is something I wrote passionately about in the column that earned me the votes to gain my position as columnist for the Crescenta Valley.
As someone who’s lived in the area, I can assure all of you that the well-being of the Crescenta Valley is a major concern of mine. Even though I may not be as informed as others on the boundaries of the Crescenta Valley, my intentions are certainly to raise awareness of issues that affect everyone living within them.
While it may seem, at times, like my topics are more universal and not focused solely on the Crescenta Valley, I do make the best of efforts to find subjects that are informed, intelligent, relevant and most importantly well-written and factual.
From my perspective, we’re lucky out here. Like all communities, we do have issues of concern. But often they mirror the extremely important matters going on globally. In my opinion, issues big and small need to be discussed by local voices and debated by local minds so that real change can occur on a local level.
For example: If my writing about drought tolerant landscape in Southern California inspires someone to act locally and join the CV Water District Board, then the topic was a success. If my writing about national health care reform compels a local doctor to do something for the community, we win – and so on.
I would like to say to Mr. Lawler and anyone else out there that this blog and my column should be viewed as an interactive dialogue. I’m happy to post things on the blog that the community finds of interest. I’ve reached out to the town council and asked them to submit things. And I welcome comments, criticism and suggestions for topics to write about.
I’ve tried to mention the blog a couple of times in my column and my email address is available. I can’t promise to write about every topic suggested, but I’m certainly willing to listen.
So to any others I may have offended by not knowing the proper boundaries of CV, forgive me.
Hope to hear from some more of you soon.
Gary Huerta
